Tamarillo Rasam

Tamarillo Rasam

Tamarillo….a not so common fruit on my table but thanks to farmizen I received a nice batch of ripe and plump ones. Here is an unusual recipe of a no tamarind tangy rasam with an intense fruity flavour of this wonder fruit also known as the tree tomato.

  • Red gram dal 1/4 Cup
  • Country tomato 1 medium
  • Tamarillo flesh… From 6 fruits
  • Sambhar powder 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Mustard seed 1/2tsp
  • Ghee 1tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Coriander leaves finely chopped 1 tbsp
  • Water 750 ml
  1. Pressure cook dal and tomato together till soft. Mash well.
  2. Take a pan, add half the quantity of water mentioned.
  3. Add tamarillo flesh, asafoetida, sambhar powder, salt as required and bring it to a boil.
  4. Add the mashes dal and simmer for 3 minutes till the rasam begins to froth on the sides.
  5. Switch off the flame and temper in ghee with mustard seeds, Cumin and curry leaves.
  6. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice.

NOTE
Cut tamarillo into half and scoop the flesh with a spoon.
The skin of tamarillo will be bitter.
