Tamarillo Rasam
Tamarillo….a not so common fruit on my table but thanks to farmizen I received a nice batch of ripe and plump ones. Here is an unusual recipe of a no tamarind tangy rasam with an intense fruity flavour of this wonder fruit also known as the tree tomato.
- Red gram dal 1/4 Cup
- Country tomato 1 medium
- Tamarillo flesh… From 6 fruits
- Sambhar powder 1 tsp
- Asafoetida a pinch
- Cumin seeds 1 tsp
- Mustard seed 1/2tsp
- Ghee 1tsp
- Curry leaves few
- Coriander leaves finely chopped 1 tbsp
- Water 750 ml
- Pressure cook dal and tomato together till soft. Mash well.
- Take a pan, add half the quantity of water mentioned.
- Add tamarillo flesh, asafoetida, sambhar powder, salt as required and bring it to a boil.
- Add the mashes dal and simmer for 3 minutes till the rasam begins to froth on the sides.
- Switch off the flame and temper in ghee with mustard seeds, Cumin and curry leaves.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice.
NOTE
Cut tamarillo into half and scoop the flesh with a spoon.
The skin of tamarillo will be bitter.
