Sunday Brunch Recipes | Classic Combo 35

A delicious Sunday Brunch comprising wheat poories …fluffy and soft, deep fried, these traditional Indian flat breads are always much sought after by my family. Well accompanied by chole, aamras, and Bombay chutney, the meal left us satiated and prepared us for a long and satisfying siesta. The meal prep was a combined effort of the family. Kids were excited with small tasks given to them. Thus, a Sunday was not just transformed into a funday but one of family bonding and reminiscence.

Sunday, which comes from the Latin word diēs sōlis or “sun’s day”, started its journey as a day devoted to the Sun. Thanks to the early Indus civilization and the ancient Babylonians the day was spent paying respect to the sun god despite a seven-day working week under the British rule. It was in 1890 that Narayan Meghaji Lokhande, a Mill leader in Bombay strived for 7 long years to give the mill workers freedom and rest on a Sunday. This victory inspired many and finally Indian workers were granted a free Sunday. This led to special Sunday meals as a mark of celebration. Thus, Sunday lunches and brunches made their appearance on the Indian soil.
