Brahmi is a medicinal herb widely used as a memory enhancer according to ancient texts. Its nomenclature finds its origin in “Brahma” the legendary creator and since the brain is the focal point of all creative actions in the human body, hence the name (Centella Asiatica). This herb is synonymous with brain repair and revitalization of nerve and brain cells. Hence aptly referred to as “Sarasvati” too. It is known to boost memory and intellect since prehistoric times. Research indicates its efficacy in treating stress-related disorders.

Ingredients for Brahmi Radish Chutney:

For chutney A:

  • Washed Brahmi leaves 1 cup
  • Radish grated 1 cup
  • Black gram dal 1/4cup
  • Red chilly 4 (adjust it to the spice level required)
  • Tamarind marble size
  • Curry leaves handful
  • Oil 1tsp
  • Salt as required

Brahmi Leaves

For tempering B:

  • Oil 1tsp
  • Mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Black gram dal 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Red chilly broken 1

Preparation Method:

  • Take the oil in a heavy-bottomed pan.
  • Add all ingredients A.
  • Saute till the radish and Brahmi leaves wilt and dal turns brown
  • Cool.
  • Grind to a coarse paste.
  • Take a tempering ladle. Add oil and when hot temper ingredients B.
  • Pour the tempering over the chutney and mix well.
  • Serve with idlies, dosas, pongal, parathas, rotis, curd rice
