Today the 22nd of July is the auspicious star of Pooram and combined with the month of Aadi is celebrated in the Vaishnava Sampradaya as the day in which the 10th-century girl poet, one of the 12 Alvars and incarnation of Bhoomi Nachiyar was born. Her 30 verses of Thiruppavai and 143 verses of Nachiar Thirumozhi have impacted the daily religious life of every vaishnavite. Both these poetic verses in Tamizh display her mastery and literary maturity beyond her childhood years when these masterpieces were penned.
In her poetic verse she vows to offer Lord Vishnu 100 pots of butter and 100 pots of akkaraadisal / akkaravadisal. A delicious payasam of rice cooked in milk & ghee and sweetened with jaggery this specialty is offered as neivedhyam on this celebratory day of Aadi Pooram. The divine and the specific neivedhyam always have an interesting legend behind them. But in case of Andal the inference is drawn from her well-documented poetic verses. Keeping up with the tradition of using sweetened milk as an offering today’s neivedhyam has taken a small detour from a payasam to a burfi. Milk Burfi Recipe
Ingredients for Milk Burfi:
- Whole Milk 1C
- Sugar 4 Tbsp
- Elaichi/Green Cardamom Powder ½ tsp
- Juice of Lemon 2 Tbsp
- Ghee 1tsp
Preparation Method for Milk Burfi:
- Take a heavy-bottomed pan. Add milk and bring to a boil. Simmer till yellow in color and reduced to half.
- Add the lemon juice and stir to curdle. Simmer the mixture till dry.
- Add sugar and simmer till all liquid evaporates. Add a tsp of ghee and cardamom powder.
- Mix well and pour onto a greased plate. Cool and slice.
