The Indian bread or roti is an unleavened flatbread and is a staple of several homes of the Indian subcontinent. It is more predominantly consumed by people inhabiting the northern regions of India. Roti is also known as Chapatis or pulkhas and are made of whole wheat flour known as atta. The flour mixed into dough with water and a pinch of salt which is optional and flattened into round discs and is cooked on a flat griddle.

The roti recipes featured here have been given a healthy twist.

The barley roti is made with a mix of barley and whole wheat flour. This combination improves the nutrient quotient of the roti by providing beta-glucans a type of polysaccharides important for heart health and enhances the potassium, folate, iron and vitamin B6 content.

The ragi roti is made with whole wheat flour and ragi (finger millet) flour combined in equal amounts thus lending the roti a dense reddish brown color. Ragi is extremely nutritious millet packed with calcium, protein and fiber. This is an excellent food that can be included in weight loss diets in place of wheat chapatis.
