Moonglet Recipe | Dal Pizza

A popular category of quick and delicious fare for any food lover are the street foods sold in open markets and street sides. Pani poori, bhel, vada pav, Chole bhature, dosa varieties, bajji, pakoda… The list of these mouth-watering foods is endless.. During my visit to New Delhi three years back I was introduced to a fluffy, cheesy Moonglet. A kind of stuffed desi Indian Pizza made with green gram and bengal gram dal batter on a skillet. It is stuffed with vegetables and cheese and topped with the same too. A bite into this Moonglet leaves you asking for more.

The method of preparation was more intriguing and the creative stuffing such as chocolate, cheese, varieties of veggies… Made this Moong dal pizza an instant hit. I learned the preparation during my brief discussion with the vendor Mr. Kapil and tried to recreate it in my kitchen and I have shared it in this blog for all of you. Ingredients for Moonglet (Dal Pizza) Recipe

  • Green gram dal 1 cup
  • Bengal gram dal 1 cup
  • Green chilli 5
  • Ginger 1 inch piece
  • Chopped coriander
  • 1/4tsp cooking soda
  • Citric acid a pinch
  • Chopped onions
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Cheese slices
  • Grated cheese

Preparation Method:

  • Soak the dals for 4 hours in water. Grind to a smooth paste with green chilli and ginger.
  • Add coriander, cooking soda, and Citric acid. You can use 1/2tsp of eno’s fruit salt too.
  • Take a heavy dosa pan. Smear with oil.
  • Pour in 2 ladles of the batter.
  • Cook on 1 side and turn over.
  • Now gently make segments halfway through as seen in the video.
  • Stuff with the vegetables and cheese.
  • Cook the Moonglet on both sides and serve with chutney or ketchup of your choice.
