Dip in, crunch down and yell loudly……wondering what am I talking about …It’s the 1950s scene in the US whenever there was a football match on the television. Chip and Dip was slowly gaining popularity as a sporty snack to the extent the National Chip Day is celebrated on 23rd. of March even today. French Onion as a flavour emerged in the 17th century. Sour cream was invented in the U.S. around 1815 – 1825. Somewhere during this time, the first dip as we know of it today must have come into being. It was christened as the French onion dip by the 60s and by 90s it was popular as the Californian dip.
What is “French” about this sour cream and chopped onion dips? Here comes in the role of the famed company Lipton. In 1954 a publicity –shy housewife whipped Lipton’s French onion soup powder with sour cream and lo…., was created an instant French onion dip. The dip began to appear at parties throughout the state, and the recipe was printed in local newspapers. When sales of potato chips, sour cream and the soup mix began to rise noticeably, particularly in Los Angeles, Lipton took notice. The company reformulated the recipe and eventually settling on two cups of sour cream to one envelope of Lipton’s soup mix. By 1958, the recipe was printed on the back of every box of Lipton’s onion soup mix, and thus food history was created and documented.

CREAMY GARLIC DIP RECIPE
Ingredients for Creamy Garlic Dip:
- Thick set curds 1 c
- Fresh cream 3 tbsp
- Chilli flakes 1 tsp
- Oregano 1 tsp
- Lemon juice 1 tsp
- Finely chopped garlic 1 tbsp
Preparation Method for Creamy Garlic Dip:
- Whip all ingredients together. The creamy garlic dip is ready for use. You can refrigerate it for 2 days in an airtight container.
- Serve it with bread, chips and or vegetable crudités.
- You can use it as a sandwich spread too.
